Crisis in Zimbabwe

January 17, 2008

A crisis in Zimbabwe has led to widespread hunger. According to Reuters, in September of 2007 the rate of inflation was recorded to be 7,982.1 percent. Now inflation is estimated to be 14,000 percent, leaving the average family struggling to survive. Store shelves are devoid of basic necessities such as flour and soap. Although most items are available on the black market, the inflated prices requested are beyond what average persons can afford. Reports indicate that a tomato can cost an entire month’s wages.

There is a desire to help respond to the need, but due to both a petrol shortage and difficulty in transporting goods into Zimbabwe, regional coordinator, Glen Mickel, is unable to travel there. Please pray that God will provide for the needs of those having trouble feeding their families. Pray also that God will grant the regional council of southern Africa with wisdom in how to best respond to the need.
