Central America

Countries: Belize | Costa Rica | El Salvador | Guatemala | Honduras | Nicaragua | Panama |

Regional Overview

Foursquare missionaries were first sent to Panama in the 1920s but today the Foursquare Gospel message has entered six of the seven countries that make up the Central America region stretching between Mexico in North America and Colombia in South America. It is home to over 39 million people and a growing network of over 824 Foursquare churches and meeting places. Most people throughout the region speak Spanish, but Amerindian languages and English are spoken in some areas. All seven nations are largely Roman Catholic but a growing Protestant witness to the goodness of Jesus Christ is now evident.

In recent years natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes have presented ministry opportunities to both Central American and U.S. churches as Foursquare churches have partnered together to rebuild homes and churches in countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. In the last three years the Foursquare Church has grown rapidly.

Regional Strategy

Networking is a key strategy for the countries in Central America. By utilizing the strengths of different individuals and countries throughout the region the churches will benefit greatly. FMI missionaries Lewie and Linda Richey help with developing Bible Institutes and developing children's ministry programs. Leadership development is key to helping countries with a smaller work such as El Salvador. Honduras is strong in church planting and will lend their expertise to the other countries to build up their skills in this area. Two other areas that will grow by networking are communications via radio and TV, and continuing education for pastors through conferences, books, cassettes, and in-service training seminars. By working together the Foursquare movement in Central America will build unity and see greater fruit in the years to come. Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama are sending missionaries to plant new churches in other countries.
